Georgia, USA: Governor activates the National Guard

Patrick Swanson / July 05,2020

After a weekend of violent crimes and an eight-year-old woman being shot in Atlanta, the governor of the US state of Georgia has activated the national guard. Governor Brian Kemp authorized the deployment of 1,000 soldiers, his office said on Monday (local time).

The deployment of the National Guard should enable the police to increase their patrols. Peaceful demonstrations have been hijacked by criminals. “This lawlessness must be ended and order in our capital restored,” said a statement. The National Guard is part of the US Armed Forces Reserve.
Kemp also declared the state of emergency in Georgia. Over the past long holiday weekend, more than 30 people in Georgia were wounded by gunfire. Five people were killed, including the eight-year-old girl.

The eight-year-old died near the fast food restaurant where the African American Rayshard Brooks was allegedly shot by police officers. Since then, demonstrations against police violence have taken place regularly.
The CNN broadcaster reported that a total of six children were killed by gunfire nationwide last weekend, on which Independence Day was celebrated in the United States: the eight-year-old in Atlanta, a boy of the same age in Hoover, Alabama, an eleven-year-old in the capital Washington a seven year old, a 14 year old in Chicago and a six year old in San Francisco.

Since the death of African-American George Floyd in a brutal police operation in Minneapolis at the end of May in the United States, protests against racism and police violence have occurred repeatedly. In Atlanta and elsewhere, the protests were sometimes violent. Kemp criticized the news, according to the violence in Atlanta has increased for weeks.
