Senator Ted Cruz Explains Why the Georgia Runoff Election Matters a Lot

Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) has been spending much of his time in Georgia lately in the hopes of helping fellow Republican Herschel Walker win the Senate runoff race against incumbent Senator Raphael Warnock (D). If Walker wins, he would ensure that the Senate stays at the current 50-50 power-sharing split between the two parties (with tie-breaking votes handed to Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris). If Warnock prevails, he will alter the power balance, favoring the Democrats 51-49.

As per Senator Cruz, there's plenty riding on this one vote, which is yet to be determined. In an interview with Fox News, he said, “If the Democrats win here, Joe Biden can quickly fill the federal courts with radicals, with radicals who would take away your liberties and mine, who would take away your rights to religious liberty, your rights to free speech, your Second Amendment rights. It also puts us incredibly close to [Senate Majority Leader] Chuck Schumer being able to end the filibuster.”

Filibusters are employed by both political parties to defer voting on pending bills. It requires 60 votes to end the filibuster and the submission of the bill for a full vote by the Senate. So far, Democratic Senators Joe Manchin (WV) and Krysten Sinema (AZ) have been against ending the filibuster. However, the possibility of a 51-49 split could provide Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) the power he requires to persuade them to join the rest of the party on the issue. Manchin is facing a difficult election in 2024; therefore, he might seek to gain the good graces of his own party to make the most of their fundraising abilities.

Here's a laundry list of what might happen when the filibuster ends, according to Ted Cruz:

“Here's what the Democrats want to do if they end the filibuster: They want to strike down every voter integrity law in America, strike down every photo ID law in America, legalize ballot harvesting all across America, register millions of illegal aliens to vote all across America, register millions of felons and criminals to vote all across America,” he added. “They also want to make D.C. a state to have two new Democrat senators, and they want to register and make citizens [of] millions of illegal aliens. They want to do all of that so that Democrats stay in power forever because their priority is power.”

In short, it is possible that the Democrats could pass an astoundingly radical bill intended to further weaken the law of the land and, obviously, maintain their control. Then there are the courts. Democrats are furious because Donald Trump was able to place three conservatives on the Supreme Court, and they're trying to get back at him. The process of packing the Supreme Court and installing progressives in other judicial positions across the nation is only the beginning.

“Georgia matters,” says Ted Cruz. There's a lot on the line, and the best possible scenario for Republicans is to use the runoff contest to learn lessons from the midterms and come together for the joint aim of stopping the Democrats. We're currently on a collision course with the 2024 presidential election, as well. The Peach State race is an opportunity to implement a course correction.

The Georgia Senate runoff election will take place on December 6, with early voting starting on November 26 and continuing through December 2.
