Is there any stopping Georgia after back-to-back titles?

The Georgia Bulldogs sit by themselves atop the college football world as its reigning dynasty.

It is the Georgia Bulldogs’ college football world, and we are just living in it.

After winning back-to-back national titles for the first time in program history, the Dawgs are now the envy of college football teams everywhere. Kirby Smart’s first seven years back in Athens have led us to this point: Is there any stopping a Dawg Dynasty taking over college football? Nobody has ever three-peated in college football before, but are you about to pick the field over Georgia now?

Even if the Dawgs fail to win their third straight national title next January, they are college football’s new gold standard of excellence.

Georgia is college football’s Top Dawg until someone takes that title from them

Although Georgia will have to replace Stetson Bennett IV under center, the Dawgs have recruited at an elite level to sustain this run of dominance. Carson Beck, Brock Vandagriff or whomever has  an impossible task of replacing a college football icon. The good news is next year’s starter only has to be himself and the Dawgs will do just fine. No, Georgia is not slowing down anytime soon.

As long as Smart remains in Athens and high school football talent in-state remains supreme, we are not done seeing the Dawgs win championships. Smart may not catch Nick Saban’s mark of seven national titles, but he has two well before his 50th birthday. Already a lock to make the College Football Hall of Fame, Smart is now the undisputed face of collegiate coaching greatness.

While it is pure elation for Dawg Nation the afternoon after the fact, let’s not get too ahead of ourselves here. Eventually, there will be a program that will emerge as Georgia’s equal. Even if the Dawgs do not win another national title for the foreseeable future, it is more likely to go the way of Saban’s Alabama team than what happened at Pete Carroll USC or with Tom Osborne Nebraska.

In time, someone will use the same blueprint Smart took from Saban out of Alabama and apply it to another fantastic program somewhere else. But with College Football Playoff expansion happening in two years, it is hard to see the Dawgs not making the 12-team field even in a down year. Georgia could be the rough equivalent of Bobby Bowden’s dynastic run over at Florida State.

Ultimately, it is fantastic that college football’s new standard bearer still resides in the SEC where it just means more. You want people to be great at something they are passionate about. Although playoff expansion will give more teams an outside shot at winning one, no program is better equipped to sustain this level of excellence quite like Georgia can. The Dawgs will be here to stay.

This was never about three-peating, but rather staying in the national championship conversation.
