I can’t believe this incident happened back in February, and the investigation just started in April.
According to the report, victim Ahmaud Arbery, 25, was shot dead in the Satilla Shores neighborhood after a confrontation with Gregory McMichael and his son, Travis McMichael. Both of whom were armed, according to the Glynn County Police.
McMichael and son were trying to make a citizen’s arrest, but Arbery’s mother says that the shooting was an “act of racial violence.”
What complicates the case is that McMichael (the father) is a retired investigator in the district attorney’s office. Again, I asked why did it take so long for an investigation to begin in this matter and this won’t help clear things up. Prosecutors claim the two acted within the scope of Georgia’s citizen’s arrest statute.
George E. Barnhill, the Waycross County D.A., recused himself for what would have been a conflict of interest, since McMichael worked in his office and on top of that, despite recusing himself from the case, Barnhill wrote a letter to the police department detailing how Arbery had a criminal past including a conviction for shoplifting and probation violation in 2018, the Times reported.
If everyone ran down, people with guns and shot them at will without being investigated no matter the race, what type of country would this be? A lawless one.
[TMZ] The fatal shooting of Ahmaud Arbery — a 25-year-old black man out for a jog when he was chased and killed — was caught on video, prompting a call for a grand jury to review the case.
Arbery’s death is being referred to as a modern-day lynching, as he was unarmed when he was gunned down in Brunswick, GA on February 23 by a white citizen named Travis McMichael … who has not been arrested or charged. He also happens to be the son of a former district attorney investigator.
As you can see in the video, Arbery was jogging when he was stopped by McMichael and his father in a white pickup truck. McMichael was armed with a shotgun. Arbery appears to attempt to run around the truck before he and McMichael start grappling.
After at least 2 shots, the men continued struggling over the gun … until Arbery stumbles away, shot in the mid-section, and then collapses to the ground. He was later pronounced dead.
It looks like to me, Arbery was trying to stop two armed people from kidnapping him. I would have done the same. Lee Merritt, an attorney for the family, believes that “there’s more than enough evidence for a case for murder.”
Let’s assume Arbery was trying to steal (seems likely) — that doesn’t allow for deadly force to stop him from fleeing. It didn’t end well for Arbery, and I don’t think it will end well for the killers. Classical miscalculation — chase after the guy, but do you have a real plan for if you catch him?
I’m happy to let a jury decide, but it seems they started it, they brought the guns to the party, and they were wrong that he was a burglar. The fact that someone ended up dead means they’re guilty of at least negligent homicide and possibly manslaughter. It doesn’t seem to me that a jury would be unreasonable to convict for murder either.
