New Bill Would Ban Feds from Working with Big Tech to Censor Americans

Category:

Leading Republican lawmakers in the U.S. House of Representatives filed new legislation that would ban federal employees from working with big tech companies to censor Americans.

The bill comes as ongoing reports show that federal law enforcement and the White House have regularly communicated with social media companies like Facebook and Twitter, pressuring the companies to remove posts and accounts for a range of issues, including questioning the COVID-19 vaccine.

“The collusion between bureaucrats and Big Tech has gone on for far too long. Government agencies shouldn’t censor the free speech of Americans,” said Judiciary Committee Chairman Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, who is helping lead the effort. “The Protecting Speech from Government Interference Act is an important first step toward transparency and accountability for Biden’s bureaucrats and Big Tech.”

The bill would prevent federal officials from using their influence or authority, “including contracting, grantmaking, rulemaking, licensing, permitting, investigatory, or enforcement actions – to promote the censorship of lawful speech or advocate that a third party or private entity censor speech.”

For violators, the bill uses the same penalties for violations of the Hatch Act, which can include removal, fines, or a reduction in pay. The bill singles out high level officials, banning them from personally advocating for this kind of censorship.

The House now has a Republicans majority, emboldening those lawmakers. However, their legislation will still have a tough time in the divided Senate and faces a potential veto from President Joe Biden.

Sen. Warnock supports special counsel in Biden classified documents case

Category:

(WASHINGTON) — The Department of Justice was right to appoint a special counsel to investigate President Joe Biden’s handling of classified documents, Georgia Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock said on Sunday.

“Classified documents are to be taken seriously and they are to be handled with a great deal of care and no one is above the law,” Warnock told ABC “This Week” co-anchor Jonathan Karl. “So I’m glad to see the Justice Department doing its work, and we ought to let that work proceed.”

The White House has acknowledged that multiple sets of documents with classified markings, including those from Biden’s time as vice president, were found at an old office that Biden used and at his home in Delaware.

On “This Week,” Karl pressed Warnock: “The White House knew about this back in November, even before the midterms. Do you think that they should have told us about this earlier?”

“The Justice Department is engaged in the investigation and that’s one of the questions that I think they will explore. And I don’t want to get in front of that investigation,” Warnock said.

He also said he was “glad to see that the president and his administration are cooperating.”

Attorney General Merrick Garland announced Thursday that a special counsel, Robert Hur, would lead the investigation into the Biden documents. The White House has stressed that it was Biden’s team who first flagged the materials to the government and that they intend to be cooperative.

“We need to get to the bottom of this so that we don’t see this kind of thing happen again,” Warnock said on “This Week.”

House Republicans To Vote On Bill Abolishing IRS And Eliminating Income Tax

Category:

Republicans in the House of Representatives will follow through on a promise and will vote on a bill that would abolish the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and eliminate the national income tax.

The House will vote on Georgia Republican Rep. Buddy Carter’s reintroduced Fair Tax Act because it was part of the deal between House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., and members of the House Freedom Caucus to give Kevin the gavel

Carter said: “Cosponsoring this Georgia-made legislation was my first act as a Member of Congress and is, fittingly, the first bill I am introducing in the 118th Congress. Instead of adding 87,000 new agents to weaponize the IRS against small business owners and middle America, this bill will eliminate the need for the department entirely by simplifying the tax code with provisions that work for the American people and encourage growth and innovation.

“Armed, unelected bureaucrats should not have more power over your paycheck than you do.”

Rep. Jeff Duncan, R-S.C. said:

“As a former small business owner, I understand the unnecessary burden our failing income tax system has on Americans.

“The Fair Tax Act eliminates the tax code, replaces the income tax with a sales tax, and abolishes the abusive Internal Revenue Service.

“If enacted, this will invigorate the American taxpayer and help more Americans achieve the American Dream.”

“I support the Fair Tax because it simplifies our tax code,” said Rep. Bob Good, R-Va.

“This transforms the U.S. tax code from a mandatory, progressive, and convoluted system to a fully transparent and unbiased system which does away with the IRS as we know it.

Georgia Politics, Campaigns, and Elections for January 10, 2023

  • Talmadge fired elected officials who resisted his authority. Others were thrown out of their offices. Literally.

After Julian Bond’s election to the Georgia House of Representatives in 1965, the chamber voted against seating him ostensibly because he had publicly state his opposition to the war in Vietnam. On January 10, 1967, after the United States Supreme Court held the legislature had denied Bond his right to free speech, he was seated as a member of the State House.

Eight years ago, on January 10, 2014, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution released a poll of the Georgia Governor’s race that showed Nathan Deal with 47 percent to 38 percent for Jason Carter. The nine-point Deal advantage was as close as the AJC polling firm would come all year to correctly predicting the point spread in the General Election.

Governor Nathan Deal was sworn-in as the 82d Governor of Georgia on January 10, 2011 while snow shut down the planned public Inaugural.

    Georgia Politics, Campaigns, and Elections

    Some sportsball stuff happened yesterday.

Senate Resolution 6, introduced yesterday and passed by both chambers, sets out the legislative schedule through Day 40 of the General Assembly. I believe this is a first.

Session this week will be held Wednesday (LD2), Thursday (LD3), and Friday (LD4).

Next week will be devoted to budget hearings, so no Legislative Days.

Roast. Pour. Repeat.

Good grief, not a story about another coffee shop…

Don’t worry, it’s not. Stationed in Thornbury, ON, Good Grief is a café and a wholesale coffee supplier that aims to be much more than just another coffee shop.

And it’s got some personality, too.

Founded by friends Alix Haddy and Jesse Keast, Good Grief sets the bar pretty high when it comes to coffee shops in South Georgian Bay. Their attention to detail extends not only to the beans they roast, but to their design-forward aesthetic — right down to their signature pink lids and funky apparel.

Since opening in 2019, Good Grief has made a big impression on the small town, serving house-roasted beans and a variety of danishes, donuts, croissants, scones, and cookies, all baked fresh daily. It all started because Keast thought it would be a good idea to get a boring, 9-5 job downtown Collingwood years ago.

“The best part of my day there was coffee break,” he laughs. He became obsessed with trying to brew the perfect cup of coffee, and in the process, fell in love with the, well, process.

When he found out a new business was opening in Collingwood that planned to do coffee well, he saw it as an opportunity for him to look behind the scenes and see what operating a business was all about. So he got a job at Gibson & Company when it opened, which is where he was introduced to his new friend, now business partner. Haddy had recently moved up from Toronto to help open the coffee shop, and the two quickly became friends.
