Georgia Tech Baseball Begins Season Unranked In D1 Baseball Top 25

  • It was not completely unexpected, but Georgia Tech Baseball is going to start the season unranked in the D1 Baseball top 25 rankings.

The Yellow Jackets are going to have to replace several star players from last year’s team that got drafted into the MLB Draft. Kevin Parada, Tres Gonzalez, Zach Maxwell, Marquis Grissom Jr, and Tim Borden are all gone, just to name a few. Nine players total were selected in the draft and that is a lot of talent for any program to try and replace.

In total, there were seven ACC teams that made the cut for the top 25, led by No. 6 Wake Forest. No. 12 North Carolina, No. 14 Virginia Tech, No. 16 Louisville, No. 19 Virginia, No. 21 NC State, and No. 22 Miami joined the Demon Deacons in the rankings.

LSU will begin the season ranked No. 1 and there are seven SEC teams in the top 10.

Despite the talent leaving, there is still plenty in Atlanta to win this season. Stephen Reid, Jackson Finley, Jake DeLeo, Jack Rubenstein, Drew Compton, Cody Carwile, Logan McGuire, Aeden Finateri, and Jadyn Jackson are some of the players that are back. If those experienced players take a leap and the young talent can provide a spark, this team is going to surprise people.

Georgia Tech baseball opens its season with a three-game home series against Miami (OH) on February 17th.

This MLK Day, It’s Time to Embrace the Hard Path on Race

Category:

When the words of an iconic young black minister from Georgia hit American ears, it signaled the crossing of the Rubicon on the question of civil rights—the die was cast, and there was no way for the country to go except into the future. Quoted (and misquoted) countless times since, Martin Luther King Jr’s words struck both sides of the American racial consciousness, both forcing white listeners to grapple with the pernicious reality of systemic racism and reminding nonwhite listeners that the promises of America belonged to them even if the current system failed to realize it. Seizing those promises was not merely some self-help doctrine but a clear moral imperative.

Though America’s checkered past has taken years to overcome (and in certain ways the battle isn’t over), there ought to be no denying that we’ve made historic progress. Sixty years since the country was introduced to Dr. King’s dream, the promises of that dream have indeed spread, albeit imperfectly, through this country across racial, social, and cultural lines.

America’s race problem has gotten better. So why are we so divided? The modern American racial divide does not manifest via water fountains or bus seats, but over the extent of solutions for the racism that remains. This divide is a racial one in many ways: based on 2022 Pew data, a majority of black Americans see the main source of remaining American racism to be structural, whereas the majority of Americans generally view modern racism as being primarily on an individual basis. Predictably, this divide also follows party lines: while 19 percent of Republicans are willing to say there is no anti-Black racism in our society, only 3 percent of Democrats are willing to say the same.

Financial Authorities in Georgia Gear Up for Digital Currency Trials

The National Bank of Georgia (NBG) is going to release a ‘digital lari’ whitepaper, allowing potential partners to fine-tune their proposals for the test phase of the project. A pilot version of the central bank digital currency (CBDC) was initially expected in 2022 but the NBG postponed the trials for this year.

“In the first half of 2023, we will publish the document and soon after that, together with the winning partner, we will discuss how long it would take to implement the project,” Deputy Governor Papuna Lezhava explained in an interview with the Rustavi 2 TV channel.

Several alternative approaches to testing the digital incarnation of the Georgian lari have been approved already, the official further revealed. Noting that it remains to be decided whether to continue with the realization of the project, Lezhava said:

Police are providing more details on a Northwest D.C. shooting that hospitalized two women traveling by Uber early Saturday morning.

According to a police report obtained by WTOP, officers responded around 12:45 a.m. Saturday to the 600 block of Morton St. NW, near the intersection with Georgia Avenue, on reports of a shooting and property damage.

A driver told police she was waiting to cross Georgia Avenue from Morton Street, when an unknown assailant driving a gray or silver Hyundai Elantra heading southbound on Georgia Avenue began to shoot in her direction, causing damage to her car’s hood and driver-side fender.

Police said two female victims who were wounded from the shooting were discovered at a nearby hospital later in the morning. Both were inside an Uber rideshare at the time of the shooting.

One of the victims told police their Uber was at the intersection of Georgia Avenue and Morton Street when she heard “what she believed were fireworks.”

She said that after sensing “a warm feeling on her leg,” she realized that she had been shot. At the same time, the other victim in the Uber also realized she had been shot.

The driver of the Uber, who has not been identified, drove the two victims to a hospital, according to the police report.

An Uber spokesperson told WTOP that the “senseless act of violence is sickening and we hope the injured riders recover quickly. We commend the driver for his quick action in getting help for the victims and are grateful he is uninjured.”

“The entire Georgia family is devastated by the tragic loss of football student-athlete Devin Willock and football staff member Chandler LeCroy,” the school said in a statement Sunday. “Devin and Chandler were two special people who meant so much to the University of Georgia, our football program and our athletic department. We ask that everyone keep their families in your prayers during this very difficult time.”

Two other members of the football program were injured in the crash, the school said. They are both in stable condition.

Paul Finebaum: Audience Demands Elle Duncan After Georgia Title

Category:

The College Football Playoff national championship game last week between Georgia and TCU got out of hand very quickly. Many felt like by halftime the contest was over, and the Bulldogs did not let up in their eventual 62-7 victory.

Paul Finebaum had notorious Georgia fan and SportsCenter anchor Elle Duncan on Friday afternoon, and it was because his audience demanded they hear from her.

“As soon as the game became a route the other night, we started hearing from our followers on Twitter and elsewhere ‘we want Elle,'” Finebaum said.

Duncan came out the gates strong with her trash talk, saying that she knew all along that the Bulldogs would claim their second straight national title.

“I realize that maybe I am a little bit of a psychic,” Duncan said. “Because last year in Indianapolis after we beat Alabama, and I had a frog in my throat for a few days that procluded me from speaking, I didn’t realize it’s because like 367 days later we would be swallowing frogs. We would be eating them for absolute lunch. So it was really cool to just have that full circle moment for us.”

Elle also wondered why people wanted her and other Georgia fans to be gracious winners considering they broke a curse last year and then managed to run it back a year later.

“You win a national championship for the first time in 40 years you talk trash,” she said. “You run it back despite the fact that you lost a historic number of players to the NFL, and you’re even better the next year? You should be able to talk trash.”

Duncan also pulled no punches when talking about Alabama and the reaction by Alabama fans to Georgia winning again.
