Category:

A 7-month-old girl has died after being mauled by a dog in Georgia.

Serenity Garnett, of Grovetown, was being supervised by her great-grandmother, Migdelia Guadalupe, on Tuesday, March 22 when she was bitten by the dog.

After attempting to save the infant girl, the 56-year-old great grandma was also harmed.

Guadalupe suffered many lacerations and puncture wounds on her arms as a result of the attack, according to local Georgia news station WRDW-TV.

According to the article, Guadalupe’s injuries are not life threatening, and she is recovering at a hospital.

The great-grandmother was renting the property in Martinez, Georgia, according to an incident report provided by the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, and the dog, an American Bulldog Great Pyreness mix, belongs to a woman who co-owns the property with her brother.

On Tuesday, about 12:15 p.m., police arrived at the crime site. Columbia County Fire and Rescue officials were already assisting the victims when they arrived at the property.

At 6:45 p.m., the baby was brought to a neighboring hospital and pronounced dead.

Any animal that bites a person is required by state law to be kept and monitored for ten days. The dog is now being put under quarantine at Columbia County Animal Services, according to The Augusta Chronicle.

After the baby’s aunt began a GoFundMe campaign to cover her burial expenses, more than 250 people have donated a total of $13,410 as of press time.

Georgia, USA: Governor activates the National Guard

Category:

After a weekend of violent crimes and an eight-year-old woman being shot in Atlanta, the governor of the US state of Georgia has activated the national guard. Governor Brian Kemp authorized the deployment of 1,000 soldiers, his office said on Monday (local time).

The deployment of the National Guard should enable the police to increase their patrols. Peaceful demonstrations have been hijacked by criminals. “This lawlessness must be ended and order in our capital restored,” said a statement. The National Guard is part of the US Armed Forces Reserve.
Kemp also declared the state of emergency in Georgia. Over the past long holiday weekend, more than 30 people in Georgia were wounded by gunfire. Five people were killed, including the eight-year-old girl.

The eight-year-old died near the fast food restaurant where the African American Rayshard Brooks was allegedly shot by police officers. Since then, demonstrations against police violence have taken place regularly.
The CNN broadcaster reported that a total of six children were killed by gunfire nationwide last weekend, on which Independence Day was celebrated in the United States: the eight-year-old in Atlanta, a boy of the same age in Hoover, Alabama, an eleven-year-old in the capital Washington a seven year old, a 14 year old in Chicago and a six year old in San Francisco.

Since the death of African-American George Floyd in a brutal police operation in Minneapolis at the end of May in the United States, protests against racism and police violence have occurred repeatedly. In Atlanta and elsewhere, the protests were sometimes violent. Kemp criticized the news, according to the violence in Atlanta has increased for weeks.

I can’t believe this incident happened back in February, and the investigation just started in April.

According to the report, victim Ahmaud Arbery, 25, was shot dead in the Satilla Shores neighborhood after a confrontation with Gregory McMichael and his son, Travis McMichael. Both of whom were armed, according to the Glynn County Police.

McMichael and son were trying to make a citizen’s arrest, but Arbery’s mother says that the shooting was an “act of racial violence.”

What complicates the case is that McMichael (the father) is a retired investigator in the district attorney’s office. Again, I asked why did it take so long for an investigation to begin in this matter and this won’t help clear things up. Prosecutors claim the two acted within the scope of Georgia’s citizen’s arrest statute.

George E. Barnhill, the Waycross County D.A., recused himself for what would have been a conflict of interest, since McMichael worked in his office and on top of that, despite recusing himself from the case, Barnhill wrote a letter to the police department detailing how Arbery had a criminal past including a conviction for shoplifting and probation violation in 2018, the Times reported.
